Cette illustration humoristique du dessinateur Kak accompagne un article publi\u00e9 le 9 avril par L'Opinion, dont le titre r\u00e9sume l'enjeu : \"Bonjour le progr\u00e8s ? C'est la Terre. Trop vite, trop loin, trop fort : les avanc\u00e9es technologiques consomment beaucoup d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, de m\u00e9taux rares et de terres... sans r\u00e9flexion ni planification. Il n'est pas trop tard pour rectifier le tir\".\n\nCette mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 de l'IA et de son impact sur l'environnement est soulign\u00e9e par les principaux acteurs concern\u00e9s eux-m\u00eames. Sam Altman, fondateur d'OpenAI, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 lors du r\u00e9cent sommet de Davos1 qu'\"une perc\u00e9e majeure dans le domaine de l'\u00e9nergie est n\u00e9cessaire\" car \"il est tout \u00e0 fait juste de dire que l'IA va avoir besoin de beaucoup plus d'\u00e9nergie\".\n\nBill Gates a abond\u00e9 dans ce sens, \u00e9voquant une \"quantit\u00e9 vertigineuse d'\u00e9nergie n\u00e9cessaire\", l'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \u00e9tant \"une variable cl\u00e9 de la rentabilit\u00e9 d'un centre de donn\u00e9es\". Au total, l'IA pourrait consommer 85 \u00e0 134 TWh d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 en 2027, soit l'\u00e9quivalent de la consommation de l'Argentine ou de la Su\u00e8de.2 Cela pose de s\u00e9rieuses questions sur la compatibilit\u00e9 du d\u00e9veloppement de l'IA avec la transition \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique. En termes d'opportunit\u00e9, cette question est au c\u0153ur de l'une des recommandations du rapport \"IA : notre ambition pour la France\" remis par la Commission Intelligence Artificielle \u00e0 Emmanuel Macron en mars dernier.\n\nAlors que la France est tr\u00e8s en retard dans le d\u00e9veloppement de l'IA mais qu'elle est leader dans l'environnement et les \u00e9nergies bas carbone, avec des entreprises de premier plan mondial comme Suez, Veolia, Saur, EDF, Engie, Sonepar, Rexel, Schneider ou Legrand, le rapport pr\u00e9conise d'adopter une strat\u00e9gie de sp\u00e9cialisation. Penser que la seule option (en mati\u00e8re d'IA) est de copier le mod\u00e8le am\u00e9ricain est absurde\". Il faut au contraire \"faire de la France un pionnier de l'IA pour la plan\u00e8te en renfor\u00e7ant la transparence, la recherche de mod\u00e8les \u00e0 faible impact et l'utilisation de l'IA pour accompagner les transitions \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques et environnementales\".3 Sur ce dernier point, la solution r\u00e9side - comme souvent - dans la question de l'usage et remettre toute technologie \u00e0 sa place de simple outil pour un usage pr\u00e9cis... qui doit \u00eatre d\u00e9fini collectivement et faire l'objet d'une appropriation politique. L'IA, gourmande en \u00e9nergie, permettra-t-elle de r\u00e9duire et de rationaliser la consommation \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique mondiale ?
