It is the most difficult because the paradigm of <strong>\u2018complex thought\u2019<\/strong> (Edgar Morin<sup>1<\/sup>) has taken over. Our everyday semantics is evidence enough of this: all is \u2018systemic\u2019, \u2018hybrid\u2019, holistic\u2019 or \u2018fluid\u2019. No matter where we look, the \u2018VUCA\u2019 world (for volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous<sup>2<\/sup>) stretches as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Yet, applied to every situation, this complexity dogma actually makes us lose understanding, potential for action and responsibility. First, we lose understanding because <strong>it forces on us a baroque representation of the world<\/strong> where everything is entangled, where the part is in the whole but the whole is also in the part<sup>3<\/sup>, and where the causes of an event are indeterminable and subject to the retroactive effects of their own consequences<sup>4<\/sup>. Referring the search for truth to a reductive and mutilating approach to reality, it also encourages <strong>the equivalence of opinions<\/strong> and accentuates the shortcomings of the post-truth era<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Second, we lose potential for action because from the moment everything becomes complex, how can we not be consumed with panic and paralysis?<\/strong> Where should we start if, as soon as we touch just one thread of the fabric of reality, the whole spool risks becoming even more entangled? Our inaction in the face of climate change derives in part from this representation of the problem as something of endless complexity and from the idea that the slightest attempt to do something about it would raise other issues that are even worse. <strong>The fable of the butterfly\u2019s wings<\/strong> in Brazil that generates a hurricane at the other end of the world leads to our inertia and impuissance. Yet <strong>\u2018the secret to action is to get started\u2019<\/strong><sup>6<\/sup>, as the philosopher Alain put it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s complicated\u2019 therefore becomes an excuse not to act. Whilst the state of the world requires us to commit to action now more than ever, <strong>today we are seeing a great disengagement, <\/strong>visible in both the civic and corporate worlds. Referring to effects of the system, the complexity dogma takes away individual responsibility. Learning to think, act and live with simplicity appears more urgent than ever. But the path is not easy. As the minimalist architect John Pawson put it: <strong>\u2018Simplicity is actually very difficult to achieve. It depends on care, thought, knowledge and patience.\u2019<\/strong><sup>7<\/sup> Let us add \u2018courage\u2019 to this list of ingredients, the courage to question a triumphant representation of reality that may well be one of our great contemporary ideologies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>____________<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>1<\/sup> <em>Published in 1990, the book Introduction \u00e0 la pens\u00e9e complexe [Introduction to complex<br \/>thought] by Edgar Morin presents the main principles of complex thought.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>2<\/sup> <em>The acronym VUCA was created by the US army in the 1990s.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>3<\/sup> <em>Edgar Morin call this idea the \u2018holographic principle\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>4<\/sup> <em>This is what Morin calls the \u2018recursive principle\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>5<\/sup> <em>This is a possible interpretation of another principle of complex thought, the \u2018dialogical principle\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>6<\/sup> <em>Alain, translated from the French \u2018Le secret de l\u2019action, c\u2019est de s\u2019y mettre.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><sup>7<\/sup> <em>The book Minimum by John Pawson was first published in 2006.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<p><strong>Sophie Chassat &#8211; Philosopher and Partner &#8211; Wemean<\/strong><br \/><em>Accuracy Talks Straight #5 \u2013 The Cultural Corner<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To stop seeing everything through the prism of complexity: that is without doubt the most difficult thing that we must learn to do again.
